What We Look For on Exposed Frontage
We assess above and below the waterline, because on this shoreline the footings tell the story. Displacement, shear, and whether a structure is still sitting where it was installed are the first three checks, and none can be made from standing on the deck.
Then hardware, comprehensively rather than by sampling. Wave and wake loading on a long-fetch frontage works every through-bolt on the structure across a season, and elongated bolt holes are a Gilford finding far more often than a sheltered-bay one.
Canopy frames and lift structures get the same treatment. On exposed frontage a canopy specified for appearance rather than for wind is a liability, and we will say so plainly if that is what is on your dock.
