Being enclosed, Alton Bay is protected from the open-water wave action that batters the Gilford shore. What it is not protected from is ice, and on this water ice is the whole story. A narrow, shallow, enclosed bay freezes early, freezes thick, and exerts steady expansion pressure against anything in it.

Looking for Damage You Cannot See

My Alton dock looks fine. Why would it need checking?
Because pressing ice does not produce damage you can see from the deck.
