What Ice-Out Actually Means
Ice-out on Winnipesaukee is not a measurement of ice coverage. It is a navigational call: the lake is declared ice-out when it is clear enough for the cruise ship MS Mount Washington to reach all five of its ports — Alton Bay, Center Harbor, Meredith, Weirs Beach and Wolfeboro.
The call is made by Emerson Aviation in Gilford, from aerial observation of the lake. It is a genuine local institution, and the series of dates goes back to the 1880s.
Ice-out does not mean your dock can go back in. The declaration is about the main lake being navigable for a large vessel between five ports. Sheltered bays, the backs of coves and small connected waters hold ice well after the broads open, and shoreline ground usually needs several more days of thaw before it will carry equipment. We time spring installs to conditions at your specific frontage, not to the announcement.
Earliest, Latest, and the Direction of Travel
The trend in the record is not subtle. The four earliest ice-outs in the entire series have all occurred within roughly the last sixteen years, and reporting on the dataset puts the shift in the average at around nine days earlier over the period examined.
For a waterfront owner that has a practical consequence rather than merely an atmospheric one: the season is arriving earlier on average, but the variance remains enormous. A lake that opened on 17 March in 2024 opened on 2 May in 2001. Planning a spring install around an average date is planning around a number that has almost never actually occurred.

Scheduling Against a Date Nobody Can Predict
The spread in that table — 17 March at one end, 2 May at the other — is the entire scheduling problem in this trade, and it is why we handle spring dates the way we do.
Book the slot, not the date
You reserve a position in the spring sequence the previous autumn. We work down that sequence as conditions allow, and you know roughly where you sit rather than holding a date that the weather may make meaningless.
We tell you early when it is running late
If ice-out is trending toward the back end of that range, you hear about it while you can still change plans — not on the morning you expected to be swimming.
Your frontage is not the broads
Sheltered coves, small connected waters and the backs of bays hold ice after the main lake opens. Shoreline access needs ground that will carry equipment. Both can add days or weeks beyond the announcement.
Autumn is the date that actually matters
Spring timing is an inconvenience if it slips. Autumn timing is what determines whether your dock survives the winter, and unlike ice-out it is entirely within your control. Take the early slot.

Who declares ice-out, and how?

Does ice-out mean the lake is free of ice?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. It means the main lake is navigable between the five ports. There can be, and usually is, substantial ice remaining in sheltered water, the backs of coves and along shorelines when ice-out is called.
Do the other lakes go out at the same time?
No. Smaller and shallower waters — Waukewan, the Suncooks, Webster Lake — generally go out earlier than the Winnipesaukee broads because there is less ice to lose. Deep cold water such as Newfound can behave differently again. The Winnipesaukee announcement is a regional signal, not a universal date.
Can I have my dock in as soon as ice-out is called?
Usually not immediately. Your own frontage needs to be clear, and the shoreline needs to be firm enough to work from. On sheltered frontage that can be a week or more after the announcement. We schedule to conditions at your property rather than to the headline.
