What Squam Lake Does to a Dock
Working on Squam means working within a particular ethic as much as within particular conditions. The preference here is strongly for structures that sit low, keep a modest profile, and disturb the shoreline as little as possible — and that preference is held by neighbours and associations as much as by regulators. A dock that would be unremarkable on Winnipesaukee can be genuinely out of place on Squam. The physical conditions reinforce it. Much of the shoreline is rocky and wooded right down to the water, which makes land access difficult on a great many properties and rules out the heavy machinery approach. Rocky bottom conditions affect footings directly: frontage that will not take a driven pipe needs a different strategy than a sandy cove. A large share of Squam properties are long-held family camps where the dock has occupied the same spot for generations and the question is careful maintenance, not expansion. Access by water is frequently easier than by land, which puts barge work in play on a lake where minimal shoreline disturbance is the whole point.
